Scaling & Root Planing

Regular cleanings are important to your ongoing health and wellness. We recommend that all our patients come to see us every 6 months for these routine cleanings.

Unlike your routine dental cleaning, periodontal therapy (scaling and root planing) cleans beneath your gums and includes two main steps:
Scaling: We carefully remove plaque and tartar from the tooth surface.
Root Planing: We clean the roots of your teeth, smoothing them to remove bacterial toxins.

Dental Fillings

Which material best fits your condition?

Metal Crowns

These can be made from a variety of metals. Gold is generally the best, or alternatively a semi-precious metal. The major, most obvious problem with metal crowns is that they don’t look nice due to their colour! That’s why it’s rare nowadays for dentists to use them.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia is a relatively new material and it’s made a massive impact on dentistry. It’s a white ceramic material that is super strong. It has a strength rating of about 1200MPa which means that it’s considerably stronger than traditional crowns. It can be made thinner, which saves more tooth structure.

The major disadvantage of zirconia is that it can sometimes look opaque. It is fine for back teeth, however for front teeth you want a higher level of aesthetics. Natural teeth are slightly translucent which means light will shine through them to some degree. To overcome this disadvantage, we sometimes make the inside fitting surface of the crown (the core) out of zirconia and then layer it with emax ceramic. This allows us to combine the superior aesthetics of emax ceramic with the strength of zirconia.

The other disadvantage of zirconia is that the bond strength is not that good and you need a conventional crown preparation to secure it. Zirconia is generally the go-to material for back teeth and it is used a lot for cores of front teeth. It is also popular if you are having a crown replaced.

Emax Ceramic Crowns

The problem with traditional ceramic is that it looks great, but is very weak. In order to make the material strong it would have to be thick, and it couldn’t be used on surfaces that would take a lot of stress, ie the biting surfaces of the back teeth. Emax changed that when it came out – the material is a blend of good strength and great aesthetics. The other great thing about emax is that it bonds to tooth structure incredibly well, so you can make onlays/veneers with it. This means we can perform minimally invasive dentistry which is a lot kinder to your teeth.

Another advantage is that pretty much everything can be made from emax, including veneers, crowns, implant restorations etc, which means that if you are doing very high-end work and restoring the whole smile, you can keep the material the same. Keeping the material the same will mean that all the teeth have the same optical properties, so the end result is stunning. When you place two different materials next to each other, they always look slightly different.

Emax has a strength rating of 500 MPa

Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns

Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns are better than all-metal crowns in that the former can be made to have the same color as natural teeth. It is only All-ceramic dental crowns that are better than porcelain-fused-to-metal when it comes to this color advantage. However, they also have their drawbacks. Their inner metal layer might impact visible dark lines (especially along the gum) and the porcelain coat on the metal might also chip or break. Also, they cause the teeth opposite them to wear faster due to their strength during contact, unlike metal or resin crowns. Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns are better for front teeth, back teeth, and long bridges (for their strength).

How Long Do Dental Bridges Last?
The average dental bridge can last anywhere from 5-15 years. However, some dental bridges last even longer. Providing that you choose a reputable dental practice, a good dental bridge can sometimes last up to 30 years.

Fixed Orthodontics

Some of the conditions that require orthodontic treatment include:

1. Crowding - There are too many teeth for the space in your mouth.
2. Overbite - The upper front teeth are too far forward - they protrude over the lower teeth.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW PRIOR TO INVISALIGN TREATMENT?

• ALIGNERS: For invisalign to work properly, you must wear your aligners 22 hours a day and not go more than one hour at a time without wearing the aligner.
• ATTACHMENTS: These are small, tooth colored shapes that are attached to the teeth. They help the aligners to grab and position the tooth.
• ADJUSTMENTS: If the teeth are very crowded, it may be necessary reduce a small amount of tooth structure (tenths of a millimeter) between the teeth to create more room and speed up movement.
• ADDITIONAL ALIGNERS: After your first full set of aligners, if your teeth are not exactly where we want them, it may be necessary to add additional aligners, called over-correction aligners.
• AFTER: Retainers are needed after you complete your treatment. We recommend that our patients wear their retainers 22 hours a day for the first 3-6 months, and then every night thereafter.
• ALONG THE WAY: Continue your recommended hygiene schedule in order to ensure the best tooth movement and protect the gum and bone during treatment.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO AFTER INVISALIGN TREATMENT? DO I HAVE TO WEAR RETAINERS FOREVER?

Retainers are very important, whether you’ve used traditional metal braces or Invisalign. At first you will be required to wear your retainers 22 hours per day. This recommendation is based on many factors, including the severity of your initial problem, your age, and whether we are using the retainers to finalize a few tooth positions. The majority of our patients are on this schedule for 3-6 months. If the plan is followed then they can be reduced to wearing only at nighttime for 6 months. Nighttime only is highly recommended until 12 months of daily retainer wear has been accomplished.

After 12 months of continuous retainer wear, we often recommend that you continue to wear your retainers at night 3-5 times a week for life. The reason we recommend this cycle of wear is due to the slow shifting of teeth forward and inward as we get older. This movement occurs very slowly and in general takes decades to occur. However, it can be prevented through continued and consistent wear of retainers. We recommend that you replace your retainer every year to keep your smile looking the same way it looked the day you completed Invisalign.
